Unfortunately, soy formula is sometimes the first and only food that a baby gets in the first, crucial months of life. There are many things that soy formula doesn’t offer that mother’s milk does, such as antibodies present in both colostrums and breast milk, the perfect amount of nutrients, bonding between new baby and mom. There are also many dangers in soy formula while healthy breast milk is free and perfect in everyway, as intended by nature. Your body was created so smart that when a baby breastfeeds, the mother’s body read the baby’s saliva and produces the exact antibodies, nutrients, vitamins, fat and more that a baby needs at that next feeding.
Recent studies show that soy formula has high levels of manganese, which causes brain damage to the basil ganglia, reducing the amount of dopamine production. This in turn is causing Parkinson-like states in babies that are fed soy formula on a meal-to-meal basis. This recent information is also starting to be linked with childhood learning disabilities, as well as anger issues as children and adults. Soy formula has 200 times higher levels of manganese than breast milk. That is a huge difference when .005 mg is normal and .4 mg or higher is what is being found in soy formula.
The high manganese levels in soy are coming from the soil that the soy plant is grown in, not the plant itself. There is no way to remove manganese from the plant without doing other potentially harmful things to the formula. The answer would seem to be to grow the plant in manganese free soil, however there are still more dangers in soy.
Another sad fact about soy infant formula is the high levels of the hormone estrogen. A baby gets five days worth of birth control pills in one day worth of formula. Considering soy acts as an estrogen blocker on top of having estrogen already present in it, these hormones are causing instability in these young babies’ growth, brain development and daily lives. Overall, there will be a surplus of unused estrogen in the body.
Countries such as Israel and the Philippines either have already or are in the process of outlawing the use of soy infant formula. If you decide to do further investigation on this subject, you may be surprised at the politics involved and the connection in this topic from country to country.
With these new statistics, one would think the answer would be in a different kind of formula. The other readily available formula is whey or dairy based. The problem in this thought is that human babies are not baby cows. We as humans, especially babies, are not designed with the proper enzymes to break down any casein other than human casein. This means we should not digest cow, goat, sheep or any other form of dairy other than human dairy. The majority of skin problems, digestive problems, and respiratory disorders are all linked to dairy intake and the lack of ability to properly digest it.
So what is the answer? It is simple: breastfeed! It has all a baby needs and helps the baby bond and relate better. Breastfeeding has also shown to increase a baby's IQ. The longer that babies were breastfed, the higher their IQ was. Thankfully, statistics also show that breastfeeding is increasing in popularity. However, many moms will stop when the baby is about 5 to 6 months old, at that time switching to formula. Breastfeeding some is better than none, but what a baby needs none of is formula.
Overall, the problem lies deeper than the formula itself. The problem really lies within the control and guidance of the government. The US government is interfering for big business when other countries are trying to make better, more conscious decisions with people in mind. The saddest part is that corporations and governments care more about making a buck than the lives of innocent children. We need to ask ourselves how we allowed others to have such control on how we live, raise our children, and think about health.
